Our Program

Our staff is well skilled at providing encouragement to our campers. We know that often what lies between success and failure is just a little nudge. “You can do it!” is a phrase often repeated at Romaca. It is our sincere goal to help campers reach their full potential at each activity, at the same time developing a feeling of self-pride and accomplishment in all of their endeavors.

Romaca offers a structured program that consists of a balance between athletics, arts and outdoor adventure. Generally speaking, we use a clinic approach in teaching all athletic activities and a modeling approach for artistic or creative activities. We set up age appropriate drills and lessons at each period.

TennisOur skilled staff members appreciate that in order to learn effectively, you must make it interesting and safe, but just as important, the lesson must be FUN!

Individual sports such as swimming and tennis enjoy special emphasis at Romaca. Most campers will have each of these activities scheduled 4 out of every 6 days. Campers are grouped according to skill level for individual activities such as swimming and tennis.

Campers have ample opportunity to learn and practice skills, including scrimmage play during each athletic period. Our last period of each day, which is elective for all age groups, is a double-period which affords additional opportunity for skill enhancement and team practice.

Team play and sportsmanship are central to our camp life. We take a stand against a “win at any cost” attitude. In camp, inter-camp or tournament matches, we respect our opponents and play for the love of the game. Trophies won are equated with accomplishment and fond memories rather than bragging rights.

Program Details

  • Program DetialsYounger campers (grades 2-5) have a pre-formatted schedule of 4 periods (which is chosen for them) and 1 elective period each day.
  • Older campers (grades 6-9) have a completely elective daily schedule.
  • Electives for all grades are chosen prior to arrival at camp with the help of parents.
  • Campers travel to activities by assigned teams or elective activity groups and attendance is taken at all activity areas at the beginning of each period.
  • Our younger 2nd grade campers are assigned “general counselors” who shadow them to-and-from all activities and bunk events. These generals, provide this youngest age group with that little bit of extra TLC to keep them on track.
  • Campers should expect to fully participate in all assigned and elective activities.
  • English Horseback Riding is offered as an additional elective program for all ages. Campers may ride 1-3 times per week. Professional instruction is conducted on-site at our beautifully designed two ring facility. Riding and horsemanship are part of all lessons.

Inter-camps & Tournaments
Campers generally older than 3rd grade have the opportunity for competitive game play with other camps in our region. Inter-camps and Tournaments are often held in swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball and softball. Campers who wish to participate in these travel teams may try out repeatedly, as each event fields a new team. Intermediate and advanced level games are offered in many of these sports.

Trip and Travel
We are nearby many local cultural events such as Tanglewood, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, The Norman Rockwell Museum and the Berkshire Museum. Campers and staff have the opportunity to take full advantage of these and other cultural activities in our region. Our older campers enjoy extended trips to areas such as Saratoga Springs, Lake George, Newport, Boston, Cape Cod and Nantucket.

Olympics
Olympics

At Romaca we believe in good healthy competition that is based upon fair play and a strong sense of sportsmanship. Our end of summer Olympic event is modeled after the real-world Olympics. Campers are assigned to one of four countries to participate in all manner of sport, non-athletic events, skits night and “sing”. Four campers from our eldest Romrec division are chosen for outstanding qualities of leadership and well-roundedness. These chosen few lead each country through this most spirited camp event.

Olympics encompass 3 full days “somewhere” in the last 10 days of camp. Only one person in camp knows the actual breakout day each year – and NO you can’t have her/his name!
