Our Facilities

Our FacilitiesOur campus is simply beautiful. We feel it compliments our program perfectly. Here and there tended flowers accent our lush grounds. Bunks are “Romaca rustic”, a vintage architecture we restore where needed with bark-on-hemlock logs rather than milled lumber.

Country simple: no golf carts, no cars. Campers roam over 150 acres of field and forest in which there are stands of white birch, sugar maple, spruce, hemlock, pine, black cherry, wildflowers and ferns. Throughout the woods and fields are patches of blueberry and raspberry.

Cabins are clustered with regard to a girl’s school grade. It’s a short walk to a landscaped center campus which includes a dining hall, camp lodge, arts and crafts building and theater. In general, the terrain is mildly undulating with ball fields and expansive lawn sloping down to the shores of pristine Plunkett Lake.

An internal road climbs gently uphill to tennis courts, past a lagoon to the basketball courts, nature center, soccer field, challenge course, and equestrian center.

Romaca is proud to lead the way in creating some of the most impressive facilities in camping today. Our 3 full-time “Master Carpenters” have a combined 160 years of field experience.Their expertise is vital to our Master Plan for building and renovations. Each year we embark on at least one major building project, along with countless updates and renovations.

Bunk AreaBunk Areas
Our unique bark-on-hemlock logs beautifully complement the rustic feel of our cabins. Inside, campers enjoy clean, comfortable and well maintained living accommodations. Closely situated, all of our bunks feature knotty-pine walls and ceilings, newly installed windows with bug screens, modern shower and toilet facilities, custom designed bed frames with flame-safe mattresses and individual cubby space for personal effects. Each bunk has electricity and features a separate closet area with open shelving and drawers for smaller items. Trunks and duffels are unpacked on opening day and stored elsewhere for the remainder of the season.

Waterfront & Skiing & Small Crafts
The Waterfront area is a main focus at camp. Most campers will visit this area twice per day for Red Cross swim instruction and recreational activity. Our broad sandy beach features almost 100 yards of shoreline. This expansive area allows for campers to enjoy themselves in shallow water areas and make sand castles similar to a day at the ocean. Safety is paramount at Romaca. Our highly skilled staff is made up of Lifeguards, Water Safety Instructors and certified Skiing & Boating Instructors.
Waterfront

Our swimming facility consists of:

  • Custom made, extra-wide carpeted docks
  • Racing lanes with turn boards for swim team competition and stroke refinement.
  • 2 shallow water areas for beginner level swimmers and playtime.
  • 2 deep water areas for intermediate and advanced level swim instruction.
  • Old fashioned water slide
  • Water-ski dock which is home to our 2 inboard ski boats. These boats have “open bow” construction which allows waiting skiers to “come along for the ride”while awaiting their turn to ski. We offer skiing, knee-boarding and wakeboarding.
  • Small Crafts boating area, home to our SunFish sailboats, row boats, canoes, playaks and surfboards.

TennisTennis
Get tennis right and it’s a game to enjoy all your life. Lots of one on one coaching: solid strokes early, games later. Our 7 all-weather asphalt courts and practice wall provide ample space for our professional tennis staff to help you improve your game. 4 courts are lit for night play and our new tennis HQ serves as a hub of activity for this super-popular area of camp. Intra and Inter-Camp play, as well as our annual Romaca Tennis Tournament is hosted on our superb courts.

Rec-Hall & Dance Center
Our campers have ample opportunity to express themselves through theatre and dance during the course of each summer. Our large theatre building, affectionately called the “rec-hall” is home to our divisional plays and theatrical classes. This historical building is capable of accommodating our entire camp for shows or group events such as rainy day activities or indoor campfires. (got ya thinking right?) Indoor campfires?! How’d they do that? Even when it rains, the fun never stops at Romaca – join us to learn our secret.

Recreation Hall

The Dance Center is beautifully situated overlooking the panorama of Plunkett Lake. This open and airy facility which includes hardwood flooring and mirrored walls is a very popular place on campus. Campers are free to participate in jazz, tap, modern and hip-hop genres. We coordinate our dance program to complement our divisional productions and special themed events. At season’s end, the entire camp is audience to our Dance Show.

Softball & Batting Cage
Softball is located on “Barley Field”. This field was named in honor of Kathy Barley, who is now retired after decades of service to Romaca. Kathy was a counselor, group head, department head and ultimately an assistant director at Romaca. Her legacy is proudly embodied in our daily softball clinics and games that are held on this field. Adjacent to the diamond is a full size batting cage. Campers are offered batting practice as part of their regular lessons.

Volleyball
Romaca has two grass volleyball courts and a beach volleyball area in the Senior B area of camp. Don't forget to bring your sunglasses!

Yoga & Aerobics Pavilion
This new area at camp is sure to be very popular with our campers and staff. At 1750 square feet, complete with rubberized flooring, this open-air pavilion is beautiful in design and peaceful in it’s lakeside setting. Health and wellness are very popular themes that we embrace at Romaca, and this program area fits in nicely with our camp spirit.

The Lodge
The LodgeThe “nerve center” of our camp, is centrally located on campus and is the home to our administrative and directorial staff. The Lodge has a natural stone hearth and displays much of our oldest camp memorabilia. Besides serving as an office space, post office and phone call area, The Lodge also has a camp library and comfortable seating areas for quiet reading. The daily schedule is always posted on the spacious front porch overlooking the Pebble Path and Flag Pole area.

Creative Arts & Ceramics
What a fun place to be! Lots of creative spirit here….Creative Arts is a modern, bright and airy facility. With over 2100 square feet of space, this building offers plenty of room to express yourself. Skilled staff members offer hands-on, personal instruction in project art, painting, drawing, ceramics, applied materials, screen printing, tye-dying and sewing.

Dining Hall
Dining HallThe Dining Hall is one building that definitely feels like “CAMP” the moment you walk through the doors. This modern and spacious building is filled with fun, food and tradition. Lining the knotty pine walls are memories dating back many decades. “Loyalty Plaques” recall the countless names of campers, staff and alumni who have attended Romaca for more than 6 years. Our open-door policy allows for campers and staff to freely come inside for a snack or cold drink anytime until lights out. Because everyone at Romaca is on the same time schedule, we enjoy relaxing and eating our meals at round tables just like one big family!

Gymnastics
Romaca offers a fun-filled, recreational gymnastics program. Our skilled instructors provide safe and hands-on guidance to gymnasts of a wide range of abilities. Our gym barn has beam, uneven parallel bars, vault and cushioned floor routine area. While our present facility is certainly adequate, due to increased interest in this sport, we are currently building a new gymnastics facility adjacent to our basketball complex. This new facility, due for 2010/2011, stands at a whopping 9600* square feet. (*estimated)

Climbing WallBasketball
Basketball stars wanted! Our amazing basketball complex is home to two regulation junior high school size courts. Complete with NBA glass backboards right out of Madison Square Garden. Your moves will certainly get lots of attention from our skilled and enthusiastic basketball staff. Of course, if you are just learning your “game”, we have smaller adjustable goals for you to hone your skills. Like all instructional areas at camp, we start with fundamentals first.

Climbing Wall & Zip Line
Wait till you see this! Our 50 foot, 4-sided climbing tower is a real show stopper. But hold on – once you get to the top, you get to ZIP line for 375 feet over roaring Welch Brook that sits 70 feet below. Can you say FUN? Catch your breath…but keep smiling…how do you feel? Way to go! We know you are proud ☺

Nature Center
Camp is about exploring nature, so it stands to reason we would have a most awesome Nature Center. A gem of a building, this facility is nestled in a stand of coniferous trees that border our Climbing Wall and Zip Line. While the center is only a few years old, it has a spacious old-time covered porch that wraps around three sides of the building. This huge porch provides shelter during rainy weather and allows us to be outside even when Mother Nature says otherwise. Inside, we have lots of animals and creatures to learn about. Walls are adorned with plaques commemorating major hikes and expeditions, topographical maps of trail areas in our region and camper’s nature related artwork. Mountain Biking is also anchored in this building. A bike ramp at the rear of the building leads to an oversize garage for bike storage and maintenance.

Equestrian Center
Equestrian
If you are a horse lover, you are going to fall in love with our riding facilities. We know our horses love our modern 10 stall barn with an extra wide runway for grooming and tack lessons on rainy days. The horses don’t mind getting wet when they are being washed down in one of our two outdoor wash bays. Feel free to cantor your way around our regulation size advanced ring, or if you are just beginning don’t worry, we have you covered in our new upper tier, “square ring” where our instructors will keep a line on you!

Soccer
Our most popular team sport has it’s home on breathtaking West Field. At the foot of Tully Mountain, West Field enjoys cool breezes from that stream down the mountainside even on the hottest days. Built with much forethought for a camp program, this field was designed to dry super fast even after the heaviest rain. Bring your cleats and shin guards and leave the rest to us.

Campfire

Campfire Area
One of our most sacred traditions is centered around our Sunday evening all-camp campfires. Led in song by our eldest campers in the ROMREC division, campers and counselors join arms and sing their hearts out as they sit on huge logs ‘round the roaring fire.

Archery
A popular and fun activity, especially with our younger campers, our archery range is located in a protected area adjacent to our East Soccer Field.

Cookout Area
Roll out your blanket and kick off your shoes. Saturday nights are extra special with our weekly BBQ cookout. Burgers, dogs, veggie burgers, grilled chicken and corn on the cob make for a finger-lickin’ good time. Located on our pristine waterfront, everyone enjoys a relaxing meal while gazing out on beautiful Plunkett. Oh yeah, don’t forget to get your piece of watermelon!
